A wardian set.

Necklace and earrings, sterling silver

Finalist, Contemporary Wearables 23 Biennial Jewellery Award and Exhibition, Toowoomba Regional Gallery

A Wardian Set comprises a necklace of Australian native scrambling coral fern fronds and earrings of primrose flowers, constructed from sterling silver.

The set emerged from investigations into the introduction of plant species to Australia via the ‘Wardian case’. This glazed case was an early form of terrarium that spectacularly improved plant survival on long sea journeys and allowed flora to be transported across the globe. Coral fern was in the first Wardian case sent from Australia in 1834, and primroses were later enthusiastically received from England.

Although a thrilling innovation for botanists, plant collectors and farmers, the case facilitated profound and irreversible impacts on native ecosystems and biodiversity worldwide.

The set speaks to the transformation of the Australian landscape under the British Empire. They juxtapose the beauty of the English garden with that of native Australian flora. Rendered in precious metal, the plants become symbols of status and identity. They invite us to consider the innate value and aesthetic pleasure we take from natural forms, but also the consequences of our need to own and manipulate our environment to suit our desires.
