Unruly garden.
Series of five sets of earrings, Sterling Silver
Selected as part of Artisan Queensland’s UNLEASHED 2024 emerging artists exhibition, June - October 2024.
Botanical subjects are ancient and enduring inspiration for jewellery. This series both celebrates the pleasure of having a garden and grapples with the care, labour, and contradictions inherent in the act of gardening. Gardens are an exercise in curating and managing nature - although we impose order and control, nature lives, grows, and changes.
The earrings have been meticulously formed from sterling silver to immortalise plants in my house and garden that have, for one reason or another, demanded my attention. These plants have strained against their boundaries, growing in spite of rather than because of me.
They have led me to consider our desire to shape our environment to suit our preferences, what plants we choose to celebrate, and why. Just as we shape our gardens, presenting plants in precious metal both celebrates nature and positions it as something that exists to flatter us.
